The seaport of Aalborg or Alborg is the capital of the North Jutland province in Denmark. Because of its location on the Southern side of narrowest point of the Limfjord, the city has been an important harbour town since the Middle Ages. In the first half of the 20th century, the city experienced significant industrial growth and became “Denmark’s new centre for industry and workers”. Factories producing cement, other building materials, textiles, tobacco and alcoholic spirits, had sprung up all over the outskirts by the 1890s. In fact, heavy industry was behind Aalborg’s prosperity until the 1970s, when it began to decline. It improved again in the 1990s and today Aalborg remains as a major exporter of cement, grain and spirits. Despite this, Aalborg is now home to a high proportion of knowledge-based and green-energy companies – specifically mobile and wireless communication industries and companies producing rotors for wind turbines.
The city receives the second largest revenue from tourism in Denmark, after Copenhagen, and is a recognised centre of culture, holding a major carnival attended by around 100,000 people every year. Its symphony orchestra (Aalborg Symfoniorkester), concert venues, Modern Art Gallery (KUNSTEN Museum of Modern Art Aalborg) and Historical Museum (Aalborg Historiske Museum) cement its status. It is also an important university city, home to the large University of Aalborg, attended by 17,000 students.
