Emmissions Trading and Carbon Credits

The EU ETS (European Union Emissions Trading Scheme) is an EU-wide scheme to reduce carbon emissions in order to ensure compliance with the Kyoto Protocol of 1997. The Kyoto Protocol is the first ever international treaty to set legally binding emissions reduction targets and entered into force in February 2005; since its creation it has been ratified by over 166 countries. The CDM, or Clean Development Mechanism, allows companies to undertake projects in countries which do not have Kyoto targets (i.e. developing countries) to reduce the amount of emissions in those regions.

In agreement with the Kyoto Protocol (1997), the new EU ETS (EU Emissions Trading Scheme) limits carbon emissions per company, but allows companies reaching their limit to buy "carbon credit" from companies without such high emissions. This links carbon emissions with economic factors, aiming to force business and industries to lower carbon emissions to avoid cost. The model has been praised as having the potential to be our most effective mechanism against global warming. In the global business environment, they can now look abroad for advice, partnerships or ideas to develop innovations in carbon emission solutions.

The environment and climate change are now top political and social issues. Much debate surrounds the causal factors, the realities of the problem and possibilities for its solution. Carbon footprints and emission control means that these issues are beginning to impact upon business and industry. To learn more please visit our dedicated site, Global Warming Issues.
